You asked.  I heard.  So, here we go!  Per fan request, here’ a few tips on how to take better pictures of your own children.

The Woodlands TX Child Photographer Tips for Great Photos of Children

Let them play!  If you try and get photos of kids when they’re in an unnatural pose, you will end up with unnatural photos.  Let them do whatever they would normally do and just keep clicking.

Pretend you’re not there.  If you let them play as they like, without trying to get their attention, they’ll relax.  And, trust me, eventually, they will look up at you.

Get down on the child’s level.  You might have to kneel, squat, sit, or even lay down on the floor or ground, but, the end result will be worth the strain.

Give them something small to hold in their hands.  Kids are naturally curious and will try to find something to play with.  Make sure the object is something you would be comfortable seeing if it ends up in the photos.  I have used tiny stuffed animals, toy cars, sea shells, Christmas ornaments, and even flowers.

Dress them in comfortable clothing.  If you have a child wearing itchy or restrictive clothing, the uncomfortableness will show up in the photos.  For my professional child photography sessions, I have a full wardrobe of comfortable child’s clothing that feel good and look great in photos.

Last, but not least, it doesn’t hurt to offer a little bribe.  If you are really serious about having the child participate, or your child is just one of those kids who runs from a camera, you might want to try purchasing something ahead of time- a toy or treat- and wrap it up.  Show the child the wrapped item, and tell them that if they cooperate for just a few minutes, they can open the surprise.  Works every time!

Now, I can’t give away all my tricks.  But, if you’ve tried the things above and you’re still not pleased with the photos you are getting, it’s time to call in a professional.  If you’re in the Woodlands, Spring, Houston, or surrounding areas, give me a call.  We can set up a child photography session at your convenience.  If you have questions, you can contact me at the following link: The Woodlands Child Photographer Information
